Words Can Make All The Difference
I finished helping my 3-year-old niece, Diya with her breakfast and I said, “Now that you have finished your breakfast, please put your plate in the sink”.
I thought it’s an easy job and she would be more than happy to help me until she yelled – NO. That was so unexpected.
I assumed that because we were having a good time, she would oblige to what I say. But then I realized that making kids work is not an easy job and why many mums complain of the never-ending pile of works.
I paused for a second, smiled at her and quickly changed my question to – “Okay, Diya. I’m going to be carrying the pickle jar and the plates. I will need your help, what would you like to carry?”
She looked at me, dropped a smile and picked the serving spoons and other small accessories that could fit in her tiny hands and walked quickly into the kitchen and returned back to ask, “Mamu (uncle) is there something more to carry?”
Children can really surprise us if we are able to talk surprisingly with them.
